Yorkshire Water to reduce carbon footprint
(14 March 2007)

Yorkshire Water has announced that it is to erect two wind turbines at its Loftsome Bridge water treatment works, Selby, in an effort to reduce its carbon footprint.

The firm expects the power generated by the turbines to reduce the plant's emissions by an estimated 2,300 tonnes of CO2 each year.

Commenting on the move, the firm said: "Every year we spend tens of millions of pounds on fuel costs and over recent years we've installed wind testing devices at a small number of water and sewage plants to look into the feasibility of wind power."

While some tests proved unsuccessful, the Loftsome Bridge site is set to benefit from the installation of the turbines, the firm added.

Having received planning permission, the firm will begin operating the turbines from the autumn.

The company is currently undertaking a refurbishment project to improve 33 km of underground water main in the Bradford area.
