Holidaymakers told to check insurance small print
(27 February 2007)
Those taking winter sports holidays this season should check that their travel insurance policy covers them for their activities, an independent financial advice group has said.
Moneyextra has urged consumers not to assume that winter travel insurance automatically covers them for winter sports, as many providers offer this cover as an optional addition to the standard policy.
Robin Amlot, senior editor at the group, said: "If you enjoy the adrenaline rush of winter sports, you should plan ahead and make sure your travel insurance is appropriate, covering you for the sports you intend to partake in and mountain evacuation."
He added that not doing so can result in paying bills for thousands of pounds.
The group has advised that holidaymakers read the wording of their insurance policy, which will dictate the level of cover they have, as well as remembering to take the documents with them to refer to for immediate claims if necessary.
Meanwhile, a new report from MPs has said that there should be tougher rules on travel insurance policy, as exclusions are often hidden in the small print.
